I have to agree the wonton noodle soup I ordered was very good. But here is the bad: the service is terrible and the wait is horrendous. I waited 20 minutes for a table to open up and they messed up my order after waiting another 20 minutes for the food to come. So about an hour passed before I began to eat. If you like to wait, this is the place to go. Otherwise, there are other good noodle / dumpling restaurants in Chinatown.

Visit Houston Chinese Restaurants for more reviews.

Chinese Food Articles

Legend has it that century eggs are made by soaking duck eggs in horse urine! The truth is that the eggs are preserved in a mixture of clay, ash, salt, lime and rice straw for several weeks to months. When cooked, the egg white has a gelatinous texture, looks dark brown and transparent, while the egg yolk is creamy and looks grayish-green. Century eggs have a pungent smell and are typically eaten with preserved ginger. Good seafood dishes, but rather expensive for most chinese restaurants. Meat dishes here are not bad, but very plain - order nothing but seafood, especially scallops and steamed fish. I just happened to stop this time to find out when they would be opening. "6:30", said one of the contractors who was putting finishing touches on. So I tool around for awhile and come back later. I was their first customer. "Wow....that's cool", I thought to myself. It wouldn't be enough to simply write about the food (I ordered the General's chicken and some dragon rolls...they ROCK!!). After just chlling for a little while talking to the other customers, I got the impression that the owner really enjoys connecting with the people that come in. The kitchen is an open style kitchen right next to the cashier, this is how Ken (the owner) cooks and conversates! The rest of the staff is equally as hospitable. What's also good is that it is a relatively small place. I imagine this place getting very popular very fast. The staff is good, the atmosphere is social, oh yeah, and like I said, the food rocks. The chicken I had was good and spicy and the dragon rolls were cooked just light enough to make me forget they were fried.

Visit Houston Chinese Restaurants for more reviews.

Chinese restaurant review

This is one of the newest drink and ice store in Houston Chinatown to open, and it definitely came at the right time during The hot 100 degreeish Houston weather.I like juice box’s fresh squeeze juice and their famous shredded ice. Juice box offers a variety of juices and that includes fresh squeezed orange, mango, apple and other drinks. Juice box offer one of the biggest size shredded ice I have ever seen in Houston, and they also gave you real big chunk of sliced fruit, such as mango or strawberry, (like the famous Taiwanese Mango shredded ice.) On top of that, they even give you a scoop of mango ice cream to enrich the flavor. I also like their Calpis (if you don’t know what this is look up our Japanese culture section). After reading their review and people's comments, I decided to give this place a try. Boy was I pleased that I did. The atmosphere was awesome. Their interior deco is very good especially in the Houston Chinatown area. I say that because there is this misconception about Chinese restaurants being dirty and ugly. Not this place though. They also offered free wireless internet which is a big plus for me since I have a "mobile office".

I ordered a Bubble Tea and a crispy chicken snack. Unlike the restaurants found on this website, Houston Asian Restaurants Guide , San Dong does not have any online presence (ie menu, and stuff) and I question myself why? I hear good things about this place so naturally I want to order from them but I do not know their food and prices. Why can't they put some money into a online page with menus like the restaurants listed here? If they are as good as people say, they should spend more time satisfying customer needs. Seriously, what day and age are we in now? A Houston Chinese Restaurant without a website is called ancient and not complete. They are located in Dynasty Shopping center in Houston Chinatown. This place is like an American Luby's Cafeteria. You go in and stand in line to order the food you want to eat. They have about 20+ different entrees to choose from. You get an order of rice and 4 different entrees. I had Chinese cooked eggs, stir fried green beans , tofu, and roasted beef. The portions are enough to fill a grown man and it only costs $3.25. Add on a milk tea for only $1 and you have a full lunch with drink for less than five bucks. Food doesn't take too long to be served, service is good, and seating doesn't take long either. The other locations are sub-par. I think that this restraunt is underestimated. Many people say that its too "Americanized" but I think its just right. If you go to the average vietnamese restraunt, the food is mediocre and so is the service. Here however, the food is quite delicious, nicely and beautifully prepared, and tastes fresh. You just have to know which dishes are good.

Visit Chinese Restaurant in Houston, and Japanese,Korean,Vietnamese, and Thai Restaurants in Houston Guide for more restaurant reviews.

Fu's Garden Chinese Restaurant

Fu's Garden Chinese Restaurant in Houston, Texas

Fu's Garden is to Chinese food what Taco Cabanna is to Mexican food: Tex-Chin. The dishes range from edible to good - but I would hardly call this Chinese food. To give credit where credit is due, this is definitely a step up from Chinese buffet, but I think that most of the people who gave this chain restaurant high ratings have never had authentic, freshly prepared Chinese food. This is really too bad, because if Houstonians demanded it, we would have more authentic restaurant choices. Unfortunately, as long as the market continues to demand it, we will continue to get "La Choy" style food.
Visit Chinese Restaurant in Houston, and Japanese,Korean,Vietnamese, and Thai Restaurants in Houston Guide for more restaurant reviews and guide in Houston, Texas.

Sichuan Cuisine in Houston, Texas

-review by Douglas
I highly recommend Sichuan Cuisine . I tried their veal dumplings and it has to be the best I have tasted. The freshly rolled flour surround the meat was perfect, not too thin and not to thick. The succulent taste of the veal meat was incredible. Together with the soy sauce, the (15) dumplings made it down in less than 10 minutes. Their beef noodle soup is perfect as well. Most places will put in tons of soy sauce in the soup creating too much saltiness and ruins taste. However, Beijing Noodle Cafe adds in the right amount and creates one of the best beef noodle soup in town. The restaurant carries over 50 dishes including family meals for 4, 6, or 8 people. Price is inexpensive as most dishes are under $5 for lunch and under $10 for dinner. Exceptional value and incredible food, Beijing Noodle Cafe is our newest addition to our Best of Chintatown Editor's Pick.
Visit Chinese Restaurant in Houston Guide for more restaurant reviews.

Hunan Plus Chinese Restaurant
9124 Bellaire Blvd
Houston, TX 77036
Tele: 713-995-8825
(Located in Diho Square)

The Scene
When you come to Hunan Plus Chinese restaurant, you are looking for delicious food at an extremely low price. Sichuan provides a variety of authentic Sichuan (a province in China meaning “four rivers”) style food, from snacks and appetizers to a full-course meal. I highly recommend the House Special Crispy Chicken; the quantity is great and the spicy taste combined with the crispy chicken only makes you ask for more. I have always heard about the famous “steam corn bun” Wo-Wo-Tou, but never really have the chance to taste it until I had them in Sichuan. These steam corn buns may look like the regular buns at first glance, but when you actually eat them, it is totally different from regular buns. Dragon Wontons are also something special. These wontons have the more stuffing and tender wrappings, and they are dipped in the red spicy oil. It is a good snack and appetizer to start your meal.

Visit Chinese Restaurant in Houston Guide for more Asian Restaurant reviews in Houston.

Shanghai Restaurant
9116 Bellaire Blvd, Suite B
Houston, TX 77036
Tele: 713-988-7288
(Located in Diho Square)

The Scene
Traditional Chinese interior deco makes this place very comfortable to dine. The lighting coming down from the extravagant chandeliers will catch your eyes immediately. The use of columns, indigenous faux plants, and must I say again, the lighting is just perfect. These items blend in with the entire restaurant's soothing atmosphere. On one side of the restaurant walls, you will notice a Chinese word and two dragons. This restaurant is also used after a wedding for a big dinner.

The Food:
Tay Do offers exquisite Chinese and Vietnamese dishes. Immigrating from China to Viet Nam, and finally to the U.S. in 1979, the Tran family have carefully refined their recipes to meet the expectations and tastes of its many guests. Traditional recipes brought from their home land are prepared with the freshest and finest quality ingredients. There are plenty of dishes to choose from including their famous Maine Lobster (stir fried in black pepper with bell pepper & onions) and Vietnamese egg rolls. Their clay pot (special rice risoto topped w/ chicken, Chinese sausage, onion, and lilyflower) is also a customer favorite.

Heads up:
Tay Do also has lunch special from 10:30am to 3pm. Japanese cuisine is easily one of the healthiest in the world, with its concentration on fresh fish, seafood, rice and vegetables. The pungent sauces and delicate flavors of fresh foods complement each other beautifully, and the methods of presentation turn even simple meals into beautiful events.

The Japanese have easily a dozen different names for rice, depending on how it is prepared and what it is served with. The most common meal is a rice bowl, a bowl of white rice served with various toppings or ingredients mixed in. So popular is it that the Rice Bowl has even made its way into the world of Western convenience foods alongside ramen noodles. Domburi is a bowl of rice topped with another food: domburi tendon, for instance, is rice topped with tempura and domburi gyudon is rice topped with beef. The Japanese adopted fried rice from the Chinese, and a century ago, when curry was first introduced, developed Kare Raisu, curry rice. It is now such a popular dish that there are many fast-food restaurants that serve several versions of it in take-away bowls.

Zake Japanese Cusine. Stylish Japanese Restaurant in Houston
Besides white rice served as a side dish, Japanese cuisine also features onigiri – rice balls wrapped in seaweed, often with a ‘surprise’ in the middle, and kayu, a thin gruel made of rice that resembles oatmeal.

As an island nation, it’s not surprising that seafood is featured in Japanese cuisine. Sushi and sashimi both are raw fish and seafood with various spices. Impeccably fresh fish is the secret to wonderful sashimi and sushi, served with wasabi and soya sauce. The Japanese love of beauty and simplicity turns slices and chunks of raw fish into miniature works of art. Fish sliced so thin that it’s transparent may be arranged on a platter in a delicate fan that alternates pink-fleshed salmon with paler slices of fish. Sushi is typically arranged to best display the colors and textures to their best advantage, turning the platter and plate into palettes for the artistry of the chef.
Traditionally, meat plays a minor role in the Japanese diet, though it has been taking a larger and larger role over the past fifty years as Japan becomes more westernized. Beef, chicken and pork may be served with several meals a week now. One of the more popular meat cuisine is ‘yakitori’ – chicken grilled on a skewer and served with sauce. A typical quick lunch might include a skewer of yakitori and a rice bowl with sushi sauce.

Hokkaido Japanese Restaurant
In an interesting twist, Japan has imported dishes from other cuisines and ‘Japanized’ them, adopting them as part of their own cuisines. Korokke, for instance, are croquettes adopted from those introduced by the English last century. In Japan, the most common filling is a mixture of mashed potatoes and minced meat. Other Soshoyu – western dishes that have made their way into Japanese everyday cuisine include ‘omuraisu’, a rice omelet, and hambagau, the Japanized version of an American hamburger.

Chinese Restaurant in Houston

Ay-Chung Flour-Rice Noodle Chinese Restaurant
9338 Bellaire Blvd.
Houston, TX 77036

This place has one of the best beef noodle soup I have ever tasted. Another dish I would recommend is the Fried Crispy Chicken. This is my favorite dish everywhere but I love it here the most. I would recommend this place to anyone who want a traditional Taiwanese meal or just want to try something new.

Best of Chinatown Rating: 5.0 (scale of 1-5, 5 being excellent)

Chinese Restaurant in Houston

China Gourmet Chinese Restaurant Review:

I have been going to China Gourmet (SI-FU-Lai) for almost 5 years. From the famous local snacks to the authentic full course meals, Si-Fu-Lai offers different variety of Taiwanese food. My favorite dish is the sizzling black pepper steak; this unique style cooking of steak was originally invented in Taiwan’s famous night market. For $5.75, you can have a plate of medium rare steak (about 8 to 10 oz), with the black pepper sauce poured on top. This plate also come with noodle or rice, one sunny side up egg, and baby corn or other vegetable. Si-Fu-Lai also provides sizzling fried chicken steak and pork chop, and they taste just as good. I also recommend the seafood toaster. This is very famous southern Taiwanese style chowder. The original name is called “mini-coffin” in Chinese, but now they have to rename it so customers would not be scared by the name. This creamy seafood chowder contains a lot of seafood and vegetable and soup is contained inside a fried toast box when ordered. Also one fried toast lid will be placed on top to close the fried toast box. Seafood toaster smells good and taste great with any dish you order. I recommend both dishes because the prices are fair and you can have either in less than 5 min after the order is placed.

Best of Chinatown Rating: 5.0 (scale of 1-5, 5 being excellent)

Chinese Restaurant in Houston

Tea Cafe Chinese Restaurant
9354 Bellaire Blvd.
Houston, TX 77036
(Left corner of Diho Shopping Center)

I went to this place after seeing it here on this website. However cooking could not be considered an art until the great classical age of China 122-249 B.C., roughly the period of Qin Dynasty. The two dominant philosophies of this period were Confucianism and Taoism. Each influenced the course of Chinese history and the development of the culinary arts. Confucianism concerned itself with the art of cooking and placed great emphasis on the enjoyment of life. Confucius taught that good cooking depends on the harmonious blend of ingredients rather than the taste of the individual elements. Confucianism also stressed the use of color and texture in the presentation of dishes. Taoism was responsible for the development of the hygienic aspects of foods and cooking. In contrast to confusianists, Taoists were concerned with the live-giving attributes of various foods. Under Tao's influence, the Chinese have explored the world of plants, roots, herbs, fungus, and seeds over the dynasties. They discovered many beneficial food ingredients that are incorporated into the everyday Chinese cooking. At Qin Dynasty, "we combined these philosophies and apply them to our cooking. We emphasize "flavor, aroma, and taste". We also stress the healthful aspect of our dishes."Please visit Chinatown Houston for more information.

Chinese Restaurant in Houston

Peking Duck, Houston Chinese Restaurant dish

Chinese Restaurant in Houston Guide

History of Peking Duck

The origin of the Peking Duck dates back to the Ming Dynasty, about 600 years ago. Cooks from all over China traveled to the capital Beijing to cook for the Emperor. It was a prestigious occupation as only the best chefs could enter the palace kitchens. A top cook was even able to reach the rank of a minister! It was in these kitchens where dishes of exceptional quality such as the Peking Duck was first created and crafted to perfection by palace chefs. However, many of the recipes for such foods of the Emperor were later smuggled out of the kitchen and onto the streets of Beijing. With the eventual fall of the Ching dynasty in 1911, court chefs who left the Forbidden City set up restaurants around Beijing and brought the Peking Duck and other delicious dishes to the masses.
The Dish
Peking Duck is originally from Beijing, which is the capital of Mainland China. It is prepared with a kind of fruit tree, so it has a fruity flavor. Its skin is very crispy. You also eat it in a very special way. First you need to use a special bread. Then you can start your tasty meal. Usually, you cannot finish a whole Peking Duck, so you can make soup with the leftovers.
Most Chinese people are very fond of Peking Roast Duck. You can go to a Chinese restaurant to order this dish rather than prepare it at home because it takes some time to cook it, and you need a lot of things to prepare it.
The duck is divided into three parts and made in three different ways. The first way is the most popular. The meat is selected from the best part of the duck and is boned. Green onions and dressing are added to make it savory and a little sweet. It is served with thin crepes. You just spread the dressing on the crepe, add some green onions, and roll it up.
The second way is to use the part of the duck with less meat. It can be fried with garlic, chilies, ginger or onions. A third way allows you to make use of the entire duck. You can make soup with cabbage and the duck meat with bones.
I would recommend you try it if you want to try something different. Once you try it, you will understand why this dish is loved by so many. You can try Peking duck at any of the following restaurants in Houston listed below.

go to Chinese restaurant in Houston Guide to find out where to buy peking duck.

Qin Dynasty in Houston, Texas

Chinese Restaurant in Houston Review

Qin Dynasty

5115 Buffalo Speedway
Houston, TX 77005

Trendy and radiant restaurant designed to perfection, Qin Dynasty should win an award for best decor.
We also stress the healthful aspect of our dishes."

To read more Chinese Restaurant reviews in Houston, go to www.chinatownconnection.com.

Chinese Food - Dumplings

Chinese Restaurant in Houston Guide

The history of dumplings/jiaozi dates back to ancient times, some 500-600 years ago. As the Spring Festival marks the start of a new year, people choose to eat jiaozi to connote their wishes for good fortune in the new year. China has been perfecting the art of dumpling making since the Sung dynasty.FillingsThere is no set rule as to what makes dumping fillings. They can be anything from vegetables, meat to seafood. Whatever the fillings, the wrapping skill needs to be exquisite to make jiaozi look attractive.Shape and variety Chinese dumplings may be round or crescent-shaped, boiled or pan-fried. The filling may be sweet or savory; vegetarian or filled with meat and vegetables. Of course, all this variety can be confusing. As China is a country with a vast territory, there are great difference in various regions in ways of making jiaozi or even serving it. For example, dumplings wrappers are made with a rolling stick in most areas of Beijing and Hebei Provinces, whereas in some parts of Shanxi Province and inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, wrappers are hand-pressed.How to make Chinese dumplings? To make Chinese dumplings, first of all, chop the meat into pieces and mash them, then add salt, sesame oil, soy sauce, ginger, scallions, Chinese cabbage and MSG if you like. Mix thoroughly the ingredients; add two spoonful of water if necessary. In a big bowl, add water to flour gradually. Mix and knead by hand to form soft dough, then cover it with towel and put it aside for about an hour. Then scatter some dry flour on the board, knead and roll it into a sausage---like dough about 5 centimeters in diameter, then chop it into small pieces. Press each piece with your hand and get a pancake. Finally, to hold the pancake with your palm and put the filling in the center and wrap into half-moon shaped and seal the edges. The next step is easy. Put the dumpling into boiling water, when it is well cooked, it is ready to be served. Before eating, you need to prepare some small dishes to contain the mixture of soy sauce, vinegar, and sesame oil or pepper oil [to your own taste.Ways of servingWays of serving Chinese dumplings also vary from place to place. Generally, Chinese dumplings are boiled in clear water and served dry with vinegar, soy sauce, garlic or pepper oil if one likes them hot. In some parts of the Northeast China, however, dumplings are boiled in broth together with vermicelli made from bean starch, and served together.
Chinese dumplings and cultureNew Year's Food Chinese dumpling is one of the most important foods in Chinese New Year. Since the shape of Chinese dumplings is similar to ancient Chinese gold or silver ingots, they symbolize wealth. Traditionally, the members of a family get together to make dumplings during the New Year's Eve. They may hide some coins in one of the dumplings. The person who fined the coin will likely have a good fortune in the New Year. Chinese dumpling is also popular in other Chinese holidays or festivals, so it is part of the Chinese culture or tradition.
Family Link Making dumplings is really a team work. Usually family members will join the work. Most Chinese started making dumplings when they were small. They were good at particularly making skins, which is the hardest part of making dumplings.
go to Chinatown Houston to view more Chinese food articles.

Ay-Chung Rice Flour Noodle in Houston

Chinese Restaurant in Houston Guide

Ay-Chung’s famous House Special Thin Noodle history goes back more than 30 years. With more than 400 people on hand to honor this special occasion, notable guests included Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, Rep. Al Green, and Houston City Council members Gordan Quan, Mark Ellis, and M.J. Khan. Shern-Min Chow from KHOU-11 News was the master of ceremonies.
Today was a very special moment for me. Back in the late 1980's, I was a student at the Houston Chinese Community Center. I participated in all of their events, their youth organization, and activities. It was a fun place to be, to learn, and to meet people. I recollected back then, when the building was small and so were the classrooms, there were a handful of students and teachers. Some of my teachers were on hand today and I felt really proud to be part of this event. To see the center grow as big as today is extraordinary. I am able to retain my Chinese heritage and language through the Houston Chinese Community Center and I will cherish it forever.
Today's speakers talked about how big the Asian community has grown since the beginning of the 1900's. From a population of five to a quarter of a million today, it is just extraordinary. The honorable Sen. Hutchison made it possible for the Houston Chinese Community Center to be what it is today with generous funding and donations. And with prominent influence from local politicians, Houston Chinese Community Center has flourished and succeeded in fulfilling its mission. Of course we cannot forget the hard work of Nine-Min Chen, the directors of Houston Chinese Community Center, and everyone who made today possible. They made it happen.
On behalf of ChinatownConnection.com we applaud the Houston Chinese Community Center for its achievement in the Chinese and Asian communities.
